Bayern Munich went from cruising to up against it during the opening 45 minutes of Tuesday’s Champions League clash against Paris Saint-Germain.
In the end, the Bavarians held on for a 2-1 win after racing out to a 2-0 lead. But a straight red shown to Luis Díaz for a tackle on Achraf Hakimi changed the dynamic near the end of the first half.
“With 10 men, of course, it is not easy, and the second half was a real fight. But we often train such situations,” Bayern keeper Neuer said in his post-match remarks, as captured by ESPN. “It’s about defending really well and against PSG we have shown that we can do this.
“We wanted to stand compact and try to hold the ball in front. That was hard because we were outnumbered — even in the front line. For the strikers, including Harry Kane, it was not easy to hold the balls against three opponents or to get a free kick. But overall, we did well.”
As hard as the defense worked, it was a task that asked a lot of the forward players too. Perhaps there was wisdom in Vincent Kompany keeping Harry Kane on for almost 90 minutes before substituting him late for Leon Goretzka.
Bayern Munich pulled out a wild 2-1 victory in a game that will be talked about quite a bit. So, why don’t we kick it off. This is what we have on tap for this edition of the Bavarian Podcast Works — Postgame Show:
