Report: Bayern Munich agreed on terms with Xavi Simons last summer, but Uli Hoeneß killed move

by admin

According to a report from Sport Bild journalists Christian Falk and Tobi Altschäffl (as captured by @iMiaSanMia), Bayern Munich board member for sport Max Eberl agreed on terms with a mystery player last summer, but the move was shut down by supervisory board member Uli Hoeneß.

For a while, the player was unknown, but now this report tells the real story. Former RB Leipzig attacker Xavi Simons was the target:

The player Max Eberl spoke about in his recent interview was Xavi Simons. Signing the Dutchman was the wish of Eberl, Kompany and Freund after Kingsley Coman was sold. All contractual details with Simons had been agreed. But in the end, the supervisory board/Uli Hoeneß vetoed the move and decided that only loan players would be brought in.

Simons would eventually move on to Tottenham Hotspur where he has yet to score a goal.

Bullet dodged? Probably not.

A move to England was always going to be more complicated than one to Bayern Munich. Simons would have been an asset to Bayern Munich, but as it turns out, the Bavarians might not have needed him anyway given how Serge Gnabry has performed and how Lennart Karl has emerged.

Sure, it would have been nice to have Simons, but not bringing him could give Bayern Munich some extra financial flexibility to make contract renewals work out for key players and also provide some cushion for transfers next summer.

Bayern Munich is en fuego, but watching Paris Saint-Germain deal with the pains of trying to repeat in the Champions League can show everyone how difficult it is to stay healthy, be consistent, and catch all of the same breaks.
