Bayern Munich’s sporting director believes Dayot Upamecano feels at home at the club

Vincent Kompany’s Bayern Munich is a force to be reckoned with.

The team is a monster in attack but has also been a brick wall in defense (bar the Union game). And at the center of that star defense is Dayot Upamecano, a man who has been different gravy under Vincent Kompany’s tutelage. His performances have captured the attention of Real Madrid and Liverpool among Europe’s powerhouses, and he is undoubtedly set to attract more potential suitors, with his contract set to expire at the end of the season.

Bayern Munich’s sporting director Christoph Freund admitted that extending Upamecano has been a priority. Speaking at an FC Bayern presser (as captured by @iMiaSanMia), Freund emphasized that “it’s no secret that our big goal is to extend Upa’s contract. It’s not a surprise that there are a lot of clubs interested in him; he’s one of the best center backs in the world.” He then expressed that “[the club’s] aim is for him to stay with us for a long time.”

He then added that Upamecano “feels very, very much at home here,” which is music to the ears of Bayern fans.

Upamecano’s role in Bayern’s buildup and ball progression has been tremendous, and his spatial awareness and defensive grit have allowed the midfield more flexibility. His performances have improved drastically this season, and he has cemented his position at the core of Bayern’s defense and is a bonafide starter in important fixtures.

While contract talks would undoubtedly be long and arduous, the Bayern management are likely to want to listen to his demands and do all they can to make him stay, as the upside is tremendous, while letting him leave for free would be an absolute crime, especially when he is in his prime. Moreover, center-backs are expensive in this market, so unless the club can get Marc Guéhi on a free transfer, this is a no-brainer extension.

There is nothing stopping Bayern from keeping Upamecano AND signing Guéhi, though.

Yes, I’m succumbing to the greedy voice in my head.
