Despite Bayern Munich’s 16-match winning streak across all competitions to start the 2025/26 season came to an end with their 2-2 draw at Union Berlin, they’re still unbeaten in 17 matches. After playing the second half of the 2-1 win at Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League with only 10 men, Bayern fought hard to salvage a point at the Stadion An der Alten Försterei, especially considering the fact that Vincent Kompany only made one change to the starting lineup for the Union Berlin match form the one that won in Paris.
Even with the first dropped points of the season, the overall outlook for the German Rekordmeister looks quite good. They’re on the top of the Bundesliga table, 6 points clear of second-placed RB Leipzig, into the round of 16 of the DFB-Pokal, and are on top of the Champions League group phase table. They are quite arguably the best team in Europe right now, though the only thing Arsenal can boast over them ahead of the Champions League clash between the two sides later this month is that Mikel Arteta’s side have yet to concede a goal in the Champions League — something Bayern will certainly want to change.
Speaking on the club’d sensational start to the season, Bayern sporting director Christoph Freund expressed the sentiment ahead of the Union Berlin match that the club is not getting ahead of themselves, even with how strong they’ve been. There’s a lot of football left to be played this season, and we’ve yet to see just how much better they can get once both Jamal Musiala and Alphonso Davies make their much-anticipated returns from injury.
“We’re not talking about titles that will only be awarded in April and May. But it’s a great starting position and it’s fun when we win so many games. We’ve laid a terrific foundation. Everything is always easier when you’re in the flow. For me, it’s more important to stick together in phases when things aren’t going so well,” Freund explained (via @iMiaSanMia).
Off course, Bayern have not really faced any major setbacks this season bar the draw at Union Berlin, but with all things considered, they did well to get a point from that match. Last season, there were difficult phases Bayern had to navigate their way through in Kompany’s first season in charge of the club on the heels of a disappointing 2023/24 campaign under Thomas Tuchel. There very well might come a time this season where Bayern are a bit backed up against a wall needing to get results. Nonetheless, Freund feels the club proactively planned to help set themselves up in the best way possible for this season. “It’s easier when you’re successful – we’ve worked hard for that. But we made a lot of right decisions in the summer. There’s a lot to do in the coming months, but we have a terrific atmosphere and energy throughout the club,” he stressed.
