According to a report from Sport Bild journalists Christian Falk and Tobi Altschäffl (as captured by @iMiaSanMia), Wolfsburg would like Bayern Munich sporting director Christoph Freund to take the same role at its club:
Wolfsburg are interested in Christoph Freund for their vacant sporting director role, but the Austrian has no intention of leaving Bayern.
Freund would certainly have a larger role with Wolfsburg and far more power than he does in Bavaria, but it would be a steep drop in prestige and capability. Freund has built a reputation as an executive who can help drive improvement and excellence in a club’s youth development system.
As a personnel strategist at the first team, Freund had his challenges while in charge of Bayern Munich for a brief period during the winter transfer window in 2024. Fans will remember his genius signing of Eric Dier on a loan, which morphed into a free transfer, but they will also callout his overpayments for both Sacha Boey and Bryan Zaragoza in respective deals that did not work out and where he also vastly overpaid for average or even inferior players
However, Freund’s value as a strategist and someone who can help an academy identify and develop players could prove to be a more valuable profile to a club like Wolfsburg than someone who is more apt at battling it out on the transfer market for big money players.
Bayern Munich is on break and the German national team has taken center stage, but that does not mean we are bereft of topics.
Luckily for all of us, there is much to talk about when it comes to both Bayern Munich, so let’s get to it. This is what we have on tap for this edition of the Bavarian Podcast Works Show:
