Bayern Munich coach Vincent Kompany discusses player workloads and how Luis Díaz is a rare exception

by admin

Bayern Munich is currently on a 14-match winning streak in all competitions, setting a new benchmark in the process. Players like Harry Kane, Michael Olise, and Luis Díaz are all key to this unprecedented run but concerns like workload management come into play when you realize that these three are hardly ever given a break. During a press conference before the Bayer Leverkusen match, head coach Vincent Kompany singled out Díaz and highlighted his familiarity to his pressing system.

”We have a slight advantage in that he’s used to this high intensity. He’s done this many times in his career, playing three matches in quick succession. He looks very fresh”, Kompany said (as captured by Bayern’s official website). “There are no signs that he needs a break. He is human, so it could happen. Lucho is 27, which is the right age to get through something like this. But if he does need a break, we have solutions we can implement. At the moment, though, it looks like he wants to play.”

If you remember during the initial skepticism after the Colombian was signed from Liverpool, Kompany indicated the winger’s ability to play in a system that demands intense pressure; former Reds boss Jürgen Klopp is a proponent of this. Seeing how the Scousers are struggling without Díaz, it further highlights the importance of the ex-Porto winger in such systems.
