Former Bayern Munich star Mats Hummels agrees with referee’s red card ruling

Bayern Munich secured a hard-fought 2-1 win in the UEFA Champions League Matchday 4 away match against Paris Saint-Germain in Parc des Princes, managing to continue its 16th consecutive win in all competitions, while remaining in the top spot of the Champions League table. The Bavarians had to go against the tide for most of the match, though, as winger Luis Díaz was sent off during the stoppage time of the first half after tackling PSG’s Achraf Hakimi from behind. Referee Maurizio Mariani initially showed a yellow card, but after a lengthy VAR review, he overturned his decision and proceeded to show the Colombian the red card.

Former Bayern player and Amazon Prime Video expert Mats Hummels gave his insight on the play (Tageszeitung): “That’s a South American double tackle. I’ve seen it so often with that intensity from behind, there’s no arguing about it.”

Meanwhile, German Football Association’s Lutz Wagner judged the play as “completely unnecessary,” stating: “[Díaz was] over-motivated. He jumps with both feet, can no longer control his movement. He catches him with his studs up, with high intensity – for me, a clear red card.”

Bayern will now have to wait to know how long Díaz will be out of action in the European competition.

Bayern Munich pulled out a wild 2-1 victory in a game that will be talked about quite a bit. So, why don’t we kick it off. This is what we have on tap for this edition of the Bavarian Podcast Works — Postgame Show:
