Leroy Sané’s inclusion in Julian Nagelsmann’s 25 man roster to face Luxembourg and Slovakia after being left out of the last two international breaks was met with a mix of surprise and criticism. The former Bayern player has had a positive start to life at Galatasaray in spite of lingering criticism over his consistency. Despite earning his international call up, Nagelsmann issued a public challenge to the 29-year-old winger, calling for more consistency and stressing Sané will not be given countless opportunities.
It seems as if Nagelsmann’s tough love approach worked. Sané picked up a decisive assist for Nick Woltemade’s opening goal and played a pivotal role in Germany’s second. After the victory, Nagelsmann only had positive words for Sané.
”He had two very good actions that led to our two goals,” said Nagelsmann (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). “On the first goal he did an outstanding job with the ball control and then the assist. He had a good game overall with decisive contributions, and that’s what matters in the end”
It’s difficult to imagine this is a turning point for Leroy Sané. The left-footer’s career has been defined by a roller coaster of form. High highs, low lows and not a whole lot of in between. This performance was certainly a high for Sané, especially given the circumstances of his return to the national team. One can only hope the winger can continue his form for club and country, Germany will certainly need his pace and trickery their upcoming clash against Slovakia.
